| Latest news from MalawiMalawi's biggest attraction, its eponymous lake (which takes up a fifth of the country) has continued to draw visitors as a seriously viable southern Africa beach alternative. We’ve seen a significant expansion, both in terms of new lodges and others increasing their capacity to cater for the growth in demand. One of the new stars to emerge this year has been Pumulani, a luxury lodge set on the western shore of the Lake on the Nankumba Peninsula. This is a perfect spot to relax, but with waterskiing, sailing, diving, wakeboarding, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing and birdwatching on offer there’s plenty to keep you busy. Thanks to the dedicated charter connecting Pumulani with Zambia’s South Luangwa this is proving a popular way to round off a safari. There has been continued reintroduction of wildlife at Majete Wildlife Reserve. Many animal translocations have taken place and with two black black rhinos, 73 elephants, over 350 buffalos and many waterbuck, sable antelope, nyala, zebra, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, kudu, and many more species. Currently over 2000 animals are roaming the 14 000 ha. This is definitely good news for Malawi. BA/Comair is in talks with Air Malawi and will hopefully be operating direct flights out of Johannesburg to Lilongwe and Blantyre – watch this space. Kenya Airways has introduced a direct flight to Lusaka from Lilongwe departing every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, making it even easier to combine Zambia and Malawi for that perfect safari and beach itinerary. |
